Kanoe is a character from CLAMP's wonderful series
X/1999, and is, in most respects, and
antogonist. It is Kanoe who gathers the Chi no Ryuu (or the Dragons of Earth), and helps to guide them
with the information she gathers, most of which is obtained by eavesdropping on her sister Hinoto's
dreams. Kanoe is a dreamseer, to some extent - she cannot view or predict the future on her own,
but, she can slip into other dreamseer's visions and witness them as well. Kanoe has been
featured (rather prominently) in all three incarnations of X (manga, movie, and anime).

Kanoe is a very large part of the
X/1999 anime movie (yay!). For the most part, she is portrayed as the
typical wicked villainess, doing (and saying) whatever she can to ensure the victory of her chosen side.
However, towards the end of the movie, she reveals her true motivation for supporting the Dragons of
Earth, and attempting to bring about the end of the world, which is to free her sister, Hinoto, from
her confined life as a dreamseer. She dies in Hinoto's arms after making this confession.
This fanlisting's title,
The Empress, came from Kanoe's card in CLAMP's
X/1999
tarot deck. She is the Empress (you can read the meaning of the card
here), and
though her qualities do not exactly coincide with the meaning of the card (unless you cosider some of
the over-protective mother aspects in her relationship with Hinoto), I think the title simply
fits her well. Kanoe is a very regal,
powerful woman, beautiful and seductive, and it wouldn't
be hard to see her on a throne of some sort, especially considering her very authoritative,
oh-so-dominatrix demeanor :)
