& Denny & Alan
In case you didn't already know, Denny Crane and Alan shore are two characters (portrayed by William
Shatner and James Spader, respectively) from David E. Kelly's fantastic show Boston Legal,
shown on ABC. The series itself is a spin-off of one of Kelly's previous shows, The Practice,
which the characters of Alan Shore and Denny Crane were part of.Alan Shore
Alan Shore is the rogue lawyer at the firm of Crane, Poole, and Schmidt, an unpredictable wild card in and out of the courtroom, who plays by nobody's rules but his own. His demeanor is generally frank, sarcastic, and quite arrogant, and he is often characterized by others as being quite morally bankrupt, but in actuality, the opposite is true. Alan is a man with a very strong sense of what is right and what is wrong, and he lives by these beliefs unwaiveringly - his beliefs are simply a bit different from most people's. Alan is the kind of person who would quite happily lie, cheat, steal, bend, and even downright break laws, if he felt that it was the right thing for a client or friend. Though he plays the souless lawyer very well, underneath Alan is a very loyal, stand-up sort of person who most often does what he believes is right, regardless of the costs.
Denny Crane
Denny Crane is, in a word, insane. He's a wildly egotistical, often incoherent lawyer with Alzheimers, though he continually insists that he merely suffers from "Mad Cow", since the diseases often present with the same symptoms. Since most of Denny's actions are usually driven by either his pride and ego, or his...lower brain, they are usually irrational at best, and the legend of the unbeatable lawyer Denny Crane as he was in his prime is a large part of the reason that he is as well-paid and influential as he is. However, despite his quite obvious insanity, there are moments in the courtroom when Denny Crane reminds everybody just how he got to be such a legend in the first place.
& The Relationship
Denny and Alan have probably one of the best relationships on television, and definitely the best on
Boston Legal. It seems to me that this is because they are complete opposites, yet somehow exactly
alike enough to totally understand, communicate, and commiserate with each other better than anyone
else can. Denny and Alan's relationship is great, because, though they often bicker, and sometimes
even fight (usually over idealogical differences), and almost never give in to the other's way of
thinking on subject they don't already agree on, they still stay friends, despite all their
(rather major, for most people) differences, and actually seem to be fond of those differences in each
other. They're supportive of each other, they're funny as hell, and they're totally kick-ass lawyers.
What's not to love about Denny and Alan?& Denny & Alan Episodes
Every episode of Boston Legal has a bunch of priceless Denny/Alan moments, but there are a few
episodes in particular that stand out from the rest.Season 1
C o m i n g S o o n
Season 22.03: Finding Nimmo - Denny takes Alan on a fishing trip to Canada to help him get over his breakup with Tara. Absolutely hilarious, and completely filled with classic Denny/Alan moments.
2.12: Helping Hands - Alan defends a former co-worker who threatened Shirley with a knife, while the senior partners worry about Denny's fiance's influence over him. A great episode, mostly because of the absolutely hilarious scene in which Denny and Alan dance the mambo.
2.21: Word Salad Day - Alan begins speaking in incomprehensible jumbled sentances, so Denny takes him to a spa for some R&R. Another great Denny/Alan episode, not as funny as Nimmo, but definitely a great Denny/Alan ep.
