This fanlisting was approved by TFL's sister network, TAFL, and is for Headmaster Kaien Cross, of Vampire Knight!

Headmaster Kaien Cross is a character in the anime series Vampire Knight, by Matsuri Hino. In the story, he is the founder and Headmaster (clearly) of the Cross Academy, a school where the students are divided into two classes - the Day class, normal human students, and the Night class, which is composed of the super-gorgeous and powerful vampire students. Cross' overall goal is to bring peace between the vampires and humans, which is why he created the Night class - to educate young vampires and use them to "build a bridge" between the two races.

He is the adopted father of Yuuki Cross, the heroine of the story, and took her in after she was found wanding through the snow by the vampire Kaname Kuran. Kaname saved Yuuki from being attacked by another vampire, and brought her to Cross for safekeeping. Cross kindly took Yuki in, and became of very doting and slightly odd father, much to Yuuki's annoyance. He is also the guardian of Zero Kiryuu, whom he took in after Zero's entire family was slaughtered by a mad pureblood vampire. As Headmaster of the school, Cross appoints his precious children, Yuuki and Zero, as guardians, to protect the peace and prevent the Day Class and Night Class from getting too close to one another (since the Day Class is not aware that the Night Class students are vampires).

Headmaster Cross has ties all throughout the vampire community. It has been revealed that he is indebted to the Kuran family, and thus seemed to know Kaname's (now deceased) parents. He was also formerly a vampire hunter, and still has strong ties with the community of hunters as well (as he reports to them on Zero's life at the Academy) even though he presently promotes peace between the races.

Headmaster Cross' personality is something of a mystery. Most of the time he acts like...well, an idiot. He is prone to going on starry-eyed rants about how beautiful peace and understanding between vampires and humans would be, and how wonderful the vampires themselves are. He also tries to dote on Zero, and Yuuki, especially, to the point that he irritates both of them with his attempts to make them a "family" (despite his insistance, Yuki refuses to call him "father" any longer, and Zero does not consider him a parental figure at all).

However, beneath his idiot personality, the Headmaster can be duplicitous and somewhat ruthless. He seems to have his own agenda, and often encourages or prods Yuuki, Kaname, and Zero in ways that will lead them to develop their own relationships, which seem to suit his wishes. Despite Zero's sensitivity on the subject, Cross often intentionally makes jokes and allusions to his vampirism, and vampires in general, that annoy and ocasionally offend Zero, who is resentful and suspicious of vampires as a whole. He forces Zero to be a guardian, and deal with vampires regularly, including hunting them down when he must, as a way of making Zero face up to his vampiric nature. He also seems to encourage the relationship between Kaname and Yuuki, despite the inherent risk. Cross' devotion to peace between vampires and humans is absolute, and he says that he will do "anything" to protect the peace of his school, which seems to include allowing a certain amount of sacrifice and unhappiness on the part of his "children".
